Description

Three Japanese Yanone Arrowheads, Karimata Type.

A group of three forged-steel arrowheads of the karimata, or "rope-cutter," type. Each head displays the characteristic bifurcated, forked blade designed to sever rigging, harness, or other vulnerable targets. The form was both practical on the battlefield and symbolic, carrying connotations of cutting ties and decisive breaks. The examples vary slightly in proportion, with wide, shallow prongs on one and more elongated forks on the others, reflecting the diversity within the karimata style. All are finely forged with symmetrical alignment, the edges showing careful shaping and finish. These arrowheads would have been mounted on long shafts for use by samurai archers, though they were also appreciated as striking display pieces in later periods. Two examples have inome (heart shaped) sukashi. The tips range in size from 2-inches to 3 ½-inches; 9 ¼ to 10 ¼-inches overall.

Condition: All with a smooth, dark patina, otherwise in very good condition.
