Description
Swedish Halberd, 17th/18th Century.This is a robust halberd of the style known as a Swedish m/1697. This style of halberd appears late in the 17th century and continued to serve through at least the Great Northern War (1700-1721). With an aggressive taper in its axe head from edge to the haft, and the simple sharp spikes on the top and back, this classicist inspired weapon was in service and use during a period of military transition in Sweden, from an army staffed primarily by mercenaries or impressment and fueled by looting, to a professional standing army staffed by soldiers under contract and fueled by taxes.
This example is 90 ½ inches tall overall, with a 24 1/16 long head from socket to end of the top spike. Its curved axe is 7 inches tall and 4 ¾ inches to the cross of the head, and its backspike is 5 ½ inches long. Its top spike is 17 7/16 inches long, and the head is 3/4ths of an inch thick at its cross. The head has short langets, and there are separate reinforcing langets inlaid into the lightly tapering haft and extending down to 33 inches from the butt of the haft. There is a metal loop with a lanyard ring 20 11/16 from the socket, consistent with other halberds of this type. There is spotting on some of the metal surfaces and wear on the wood, and some movement in the head of the halberd, but overall in good condition for a piece of its age.
