Description
Spear with Gothic Decorations, Likely 16th Century. An interesting piece, this 91 ½ inch long spear is consistent with other spears of the 1500s. It has a 31 ¾ inches long spearhead from tip to socket, with the blade of the spear being 23 ¼ inches long, 2 1/8 inches wide, and half an inch thick at its base. There are three decorative works of indenture style between the blade and the 10-sided socket. The spearhead was peened in two places, but one of the nails is missing. There is a hole above the remaining peening nail where a larger nail may once have been used. No maker's mark is apparent. The haft has an inventory control number in copper alloy riveted to it.
The rough decoration and otherwise lack of embellishments give the impression that this was not the spear of a household guard or a piece of decoration, but instead that this was a soldier's spear, carried by someone who would have been expected to use it. Some facets of the blade indicate it may have even seen battle. There is a slight S-bend in the blade, which can occur if the metal is bent by striking something, and an attempt to straighten it is not fully successful. There are also notches in the blade, with a notable one being 2 ½ inches from the base of the blade. These may indicate this spear striking or being struck by hard objects. The bend and notches give the feeling that this piece has seen use, and as likely a common soldier's piece of gear, make this piece in many ways rarer than a more decorative weapon. In good condition for its age, with some spotting and patina to the metal, it is a wonderful piece for anyone collecting the arms and armor of the Renaissance era.
