Small Halberd, Late 16th to Early 17th Century.Small halberds such as this one were common in the late 16th century through the 17th century. Common features of the crescent blade, long top spike and short beak can be found in examples from northern Italy through the Swiss and German states and into the Netherlands. Our example has decorative trefoil (with stalk) piercings in the 4 inch tall axe blade and 3 ½ inch long beak, and there is a small hook on the top of the beak. The beak also features a maker's mark. Its top spike is an impressive 22 inches long, and quite robust, being half an inch thick in its square cross-section at its base, and only slightly narrowing until the last 1 ½ inches of the spike. It has langets extending down to 46 ¾ inches from the butt of the haft, providing a secure attachment.
There is scattered rusting on the halberd head, as well as some spotting on the metal. Overall, this piece is in good condition.
