Rare 19th Century Life Preserver Walking Stick.

Overall length is 35-inches. This cane has six articulated spikes that snap out when the retaining collar is pulled down, each spike measures approximately 1 1/2-inches each. The steel ferrule it's 3/4 of an inch and solid which also makes this an excellent fighting cane. Similar canes, such as this, are pictured in all the cane books such as, Cane Curiosa, "From Gun to Gadget" by Catherine Dike on page 279 and page 163 of Canes, From the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century by Jeffrey B. Snyder. Note: Current consignor states, "........plus this cane can be used for roasting six marshmallows at one time." Cane Curiosa book states this is a French patent c. 1882.

Condition: This cane is in excellent condition and is mechanically sound. Minor marks to metal. Wood with handling wear and minor scuffs.
