Description
Large Halberd, 15th to 16th Century.This is a great example of a soldier's halberd. It has few decorative elements, with the Swiss shield mark on the spike (three shields each with a cross symbol), and a small upside-down T (possibly a maker's mark) under the axehead. Its austere look belies its presence: at an overall length of 86 ½ inches, its 24 inch long and 13 inch wide head is nearly half an inch thick in places. Its langets, providing both reinforcement to the shaft and sturdy attachment points, extend to 51 ½ from the end of the haft. There is a metal end piece as well, with its own 8 inch long langets, likely a later addition. It is unknown if its round haft is original.
With a sizable 8 3/8 inch axe head and a 3 ¾ inch hooking beak, this halberd is an excellent example of its type. While most associated with the Swiss mercenaries of the time, the halberd found use all over Europe. Looking at our example here, it is easy to see why this versatile weapon gained extensive popularity and notoriety. Our example is in good condition, with some discoloration in the metal and some rusting on the top edge of the axe and beak.
