Description

Impressive Circa 1820 Large Lion Head Pommel Naval Officer's Dirk. Very likely English but the complete lack of markings presents the possibility of it being American. 20 3/4" overall with plain, flat 16" blade, 1 3/8" wide at the ricasso, with 6 1/4" false edge. Blade near perfect with just a couple of minor stains, absolutely no nicks, rust or pitting. Blade retains the original leather washer. Brass hilt retaining traces of the original gilt else nice patina and about perfect. Cross guard turned up at each end with rudimentary acorn finials, the one pierced for a chain guard which is missing. The backstrap is decorated for 2/3 of its length in deep embossed relief terminating in a lion head with small loop at the front, also for the missing chain guard. Finely checkered ivory grip excellent just showing some honest wear, with rich patina and a small minor age hairline on each side at the base which is fitted with a 1/4" wide ferrule. Original leather covered wooden scabbard with three brass mounts incorporating two rings and a frog stud. All mounts simply decorated with incised lines and excellent with absolutely no dents. The leather scabbard covering with some crackling and flaking and a few leather chips missing from the wooden body primarily on the reverse. the scabbard however is very sound and readily restorable. A most impressive dirk in very nice untouched condition.
