Description

German War Hammer (Lucerne Type), 16th Century.

Overall length is 24 1/2-inches with a 22 1/2-inch shaft. A forged iron war hammer of classic form, likely German and dating to the mid-16th century. The weapon features a long tubular shaft terminating in a roped/spiral-molded grip section measuring approximately 6 3/4-inches, providing both visual interest and improved handling. The head is integrally forged with the shaft, consisting of a squared hammer face extending approximately 2 inches from the socket on one side and a tapering, armor-piercing spike projecting approximately 7-inches on the opposing side, both exhibiting clean, purposeful lines characteristic of period examples. The junction is accented with subtle collar moldings and a rounded knop above, lending balance to the overall silhouette. The spike is slender and slightly curved, designed for penetrating plate armor, while the hammer face remains broad and flat for concussive force. A suspension loop is present along the shaft. This hammer previously sold at Czerny's Auction House in Italy as part of their "Fine and Scarce Antique Arms & Armour" #100, as lot 615. In their description, the cataloguer mentions "dating: 16th Century provenance: Germany.......Very scarce."

Weapons of this type, often referred to as Lucerne hammers, were favored in Central Europe during the 16th century for their versatility against armored opponents. The present example's one-piece construction and restrained decorative elements suggest practical battlefield use rather than later ceremonial manufacture.

Condition: Surface shows a consistent, darkened patina with areas of oxidation and pitting commensurate with age. Faint remnants of gilding are present in protected areas, now largely worn but still visible in places. There is visible wear throughout, including minor losses and surface irregularities. Notable are small areas of old residue or encrustation along the shaft, possibly from long-term storage or mounting. The structure remains solid, with no evident modern repairs observed. Overall, a well-preserved example with honest age and use.
