Description
European Short Sword/Dagger.Measuring approximately 23-inches overall, this substantial short sword or dagger is fitted with a 17 1/2-inch spear-point blade, featuring a shallow raised flat on each side. The blade retains remnants of Latin or Spanish inscriptions, though much of the text is obscured by age and surface pitting. Near the ricasso, both sides of the blade display a double-headed eagle crest, likely of Russian or Austro-Hungarian origin. The etched panel appears to have been reworked or adapted at a later date. The hilt is fitted with a grip bound in two types of contrasting silver wire, adding both function and ornament. The quillons are of distinctive, expressive form, while the dimensional pommel is decorated with vertical scalloped elements, lending the weapon an architectural and sculptural presence. Together, these details highlight an intriguing blend of functional design and symbolic embellishment.
Condition: Very good as configured. Some elements added at a later time, as mentioned in description. Blade with a mottled patina overall, evidence of cleaning. Handle is very good with minor wear. Spots present throughout. Hilt and blade appear to be later combination.
