Description
European Axe / Poleaxe Head with Spearpoint and Spike, Mid-16th Century. An unusual European poleaxe head dating to approximately the mid-1500s, mounted on a later replacement wooden shaft measuring about 35-inches in length. The head features a prominent central spearpoint blade measuring approximately 5 3/4-inches, flanked by a shaped axe blade with a cutting edge of about 6 inches. Opposite the axe blade is a smaller spike of roughly 3-inches. The axe blade is decorated with pierced and chiseled ornamentation, including circular motifs and openwork elements that give the piece a distinctive and decorative appearance. The head is mounted on a wooden haft reinforced with metal langets, terminating one third overall. There is an added spike at the bottom for additional utility and balance. Overall, this is an attractive and uncommon form combining functional elements of a poleaxe with decorative detailing, likely intended for both martial and display purposes. Measuring just over 44-inches overall. This axe was previous offered and sold at Czerny's Auction House in Italy in September 2023, Auction 135, Lot number 351.
According to its previous sale description, this poleaxe is photographed in the book 'Le Armi in Austa delle Fanterie Europee (1000-1500)' by M. Troso (Italy, De Agostini, 2009) on p. 286, also listed as a 16th-century 'infantryman's axe'.
Condition: Head shows age, surface wear, oxidation, and pitting consistent with its period. Decorative piercings and edges remain well-defined. Appears to only have one single curl at the neck with the other side absent. The wooden shaft is a later replacement (restored bands and shoe), with expected wear and minor surface marks. Metal langets and butt spike show oxidation and wear. Overall condition is good for a mounted antique example.
