Description
Kraft, Goldschmidt & Kraft Style Confederate Cavalry Officer's Saber. An impressive 45-inches overall with massive 38 ¼-inch straight blade with traces of engraved/etched decoration. Perhaps one of the early, possibly Napoleonic, blades acquired by this company for use in the production of a number of their swords, the blade being similar to that pictured in FIG 21-D in Albaugh's Sword Supplement. Three narrow fullers on each side, extending to about 11" from the hilt. Brass hilt with three outward branches exhibiting short decorative curl where they join the guard, which has a slightly turned down rounded quillon. There is also a small decorative scallop where the guard enters the pommel. The pommel cap exhibits deeply cast decoration of good quality, with laurel leaves and berries on one side and oak leaves and acorns on the other. The wood grip is cut with a spiral channels to accommodate the wire wraps. This example has only scant traces of the leather wrap but retains all the wire wrap. The iron scabbard utilizes a heavy brass throat that is affixed on one side with two small brass screws, and on the other with a single brass screw. Two brass ring mounts with incised line borders along with brass rings. Brass drag with scalloped decoration. The seam is visible but nicely finished for the entire length of the scabbard, which has a smooth dark patina with just a few very small areas of very light pitting and old surface.
Condition: Very good. The blade has some light surface rust with some age spotting from scabbard storage. One of branches on the hilt is loose and needs repair. The grip is a bit loose on the tang. The scabbard has some light surface rust but is free of dents.
