Description
Magnificent American Fighting Knife C. 1830. It is our belief the knife has its origins in the New York/Philadelphia area, and is likely associated with the Rose family. 20" overall, 14" heavy, tapered, dagger like blade with high median ridge, 1 3/4" wide at the base. Heavy brass cross guard with ball finials and deep diagonal lines cut across the surface on both sides. Faceted 4" rosewood grip, with 1/2" decoratively embossed brass ferrule at the base. Inlaid with 1/2" circular brass escutcheon on both sides, the one on the reverse missing. 1 1/2" wide brass pommel cap embossed, with deep horizontal lines with shell like motif at the top. The blade tang is not exposed. The original brown leather scabbard, the belt loop 1 3/8" X 3 1/2", is about mint with just some very minor wear near the tip. The entire face of the scabbard is decorated with a vine and leaf motif. The knife is overall in about perfect untouched condition. Blade about perfect with just a few tiny areas of surface rust and an old coating, in some areas, of what appears to be dried grease. Would hand clean beautifully, doubtless revealing some original luster, should that be your choice. Hilt, with the exception of the missing escutcheon, also perfect. The brass fittings with dark untouched patina, and grip with wonderful rich patina. An absolutely stunning American knife in superb condition and certainly one of the finest we've ever offered.Auction Info
