Heavy Clip Point Coffin Hilt Bowie by Clarenbach &?Herder, Philadelphia
Circa 1847-early 1850s. Heavy 8" clip point blade about 1/4"?thick with sharpened false edge, 12-1/2" overall. Checkered, blackened rosewood handles with brass guard and pins. Sheffield style Moroccan leather sheath with nickel silver throat, tip missing. Blade in superb condition showing around 50% original polish, a little scattered spotting and light pitting and a few light sharpening marks. Sheath a likely replacement. Excellent-plus.
German immigrants Charles Clarenbach and Leopold Herder were primarily manufacturers of scissors and shears. Only four bowie-type knives by the ?rm are presently known to exist.
