From the Fitterer Family Collection

Engraved Hunting Knife, Circa Mid-Nineteenth Century. The wide clip-point blade is rather loosely-swedged to the handle and incised on one surface with figures of an Indian on horseback, three standing figures, including a woman and two children, a tree, and a starry sky. The other surface bears an image of an Indian wearing feathers and holding a shield, with three crossed arrows. The blade is fitted to a curved stag horn grip with "barbell" quillon, the pommel with a silver half dollar coin and a completely defaced, slightly smaller silver coin used as a washer, held with a single forged steel pin used as a butt cap. While the incising on the blade does not appear modern, it is clear that the knife saw considerable use prior to being decorated, and that there is only light apparent wear since the incising was added. This knife is wonderfully evocative of the earlier days of interaction with Native Americans. Length 12.25".
