Description
Early and Rare Bowie by Town Harrington &?Co., Worcester Mass.Circa 1830s. A distinctive and unusual 9-1/2" clip point bowie knife with fullered blade, fileworked ricasso and sharpened false edge, 14-1/4" overall. Marked with eagle and in tiny lettering TOWN HA[rrington] &?Co. WOR[cheste]R M[as]S [line under that illegible]. Octagonal rosewood handle checkered on every other face, with iron guard and nickel silver ferrule and pommel, neatly machined. Well made nickel silver sheath. Excellent, blade with antique patina over original finish and does not appear to have ever been sharpened.
This little known New England maker also operated under the name Worcester Cutlery and German Silver Works. Bowie knives were listed under the company's products in 1836. Three examples of their bowie knives are presently known.
