Coffin Hilt Bowie Knife by Rose, New York.
Circa 1830s-1845. Bowie knife by Peter Rose of New York City, marked on ricasso ROSE, NEW?YORK. 9-5/8"?clip point blade with sharpened false edge, 14-1/8"?overall. Checkered rosewood handle with coffin form pommel embossed with ray design. Boat shaped iron crossguard. Blade with some sharpening, has been cleaned and shows signs of light pitting. Guard very slightly bent, two small holes in pommel. No sheath. Excellent.

Peter Rose was a New York surgical instrument maker whose work has established him as one of the premier 19th century American bowie knife makers in the eyes of today's collectors.
