Clip Point Bowie by J.D. Chevalier, New York.
Circa 1840s-1850s. Heavy 9-1/8" clip point blade, just over 1/4" thick, marked on face of blade J.D. CHEVALIER, NEW?YORK. Cast brass handle frame with dark wood inserts. A?sturdy knife with substantial weight and a good feel in the hand. No sheath. Excellent, blade with just a couple of tiny edge chips.
One of the best known American makers of bowie knives, Chevalier's main business was the manufacture of dental instruments. He produced a large number of knives marketed to those headed to the California Gold Rush, circa 1849.
