Description
Bowie Knife with "Capt. John Salmon / Texas 1858" Marking.The ricasso marking "CAPT. JOHN SALMON / TEXAS / 1858" is not believed to be period. Clip-point Bowie knife featuring an 8 3/4-inch single-edged blade with a pronounced edge and clipped tip. The knife measures 13 1/2-inches overall with a 4 1/2-inch handle. Fitted with a simple brass crossguard and a full tang handle with mottled bone scales, secured by pins and featuring a brass insert on both sides. The overall form draws inspiration from mid-19th century American frontier Bowies, though construction details and materials indicate a later manufacture, likely 20th century or newer. Accompanied by a plain brown leather sheath with stitched seams.
Condition: Blade shows surface wear with added later aging, some light cleaning and polishing is evident. Edge appears sharpened with use marks. Ricasso stamp remains visible but spurious. Guard shows handling wear and patina. Handle scales are intact with minor surface wear and discoloration; pins secure. Sheath exhibits wear, scuffing, and some stitch loss but remains functional. Overall good condition.
