Description

"Fierce Indian"?Folding Bowie Knife by S.C. Wragg.
Circa 1845-1850. Two blade folding bowie knife, 7-1/4" closed, marked on both blades S.C. WRAGG, No. 25 FURNACE?HILL?SHEFFIELD. Wooden scales with 'fierce Indian' stamped bolsters. Blades have been cleaned and may be replacements. Chip missing from reverse handle and there are a few fine cracks as well. Very good.
The design of this knife, its stamped bolsters and a similarly decorated blade design were registered with the British Patent Office on January 25, 1845. The unusual ?gures stamped into the bolsters may represent the English makers' conception of Native Americans.
From the Ex Jack Royse Collection.
