J.D. Chevalier California Bowie Knife.

11 1/2-inches in overall length. 7-inch clip-point blade marked: CHEVALIER CALIFORNIA KNIFE / J.D. CHEVALIER / NEW YORK. Brass guard and handle with wood grip panels. Contained in brass tipped scabbard. One of the best known American makers of bowie knives, Chevalier's main business was the manufacture of dental instruments. He produced a large number of knives marketed to those headed to the California Gold Rush, circa 1849.

Condition: Good. Finish primarily a smooth grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Some olive toning to brass. Scuffs, scratches and dings present to wood. Large crack to left panel and two small crack to right panel. Scabbard in two pieces (torn).
