Description

Horstmann & Sons U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers' Sword. 31 ½" slightly curved, bright blade etched with floral scroll, panoplies of arms, and other military vignettes. Obverse ricasso marked "W. H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia" and "Iron Proof" on the top of the blade near the hilt. Gilded-brass hilt with wire-wrapped fish skin grip. The hilt retains approximately 60-75% of the gilding and the blade is in excellent condition with only modest scabbard storage wear. The leather scabbard is broken into two pieces about 12" from the base of the drag and is also lacking one drag screw. Otherwise the scabbard is complete and a candidate for professional restoration.
