Description

Misericorde, Dagger of Mercy.

Approximately 15 1/2-inches overall with a 10-inch reinforced blade, best for going through plates or chain mail links. Steel guard of typical form with pierced rest guard. Wire wrapped grip. Faceted steel pommel. Possibly French or Spanish. Note: Sometimes called Left-Hand Dagger or parrying knives, they were designed for use in conjunction with rapiers in duels. Held in the left hand, they were intended to deflect thrusts from an opponent's rapier. According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor in All Countries and in All Times by Stone, Misericorde "intended to be a thrust between the plates of a fallen foe and give him the coup de grace".

Condition: Very good to fine for its age. Scattered bright gray patina overall with areas of fine surface rust and pitting. Possibly cleaned at some point. Handle/wire fine with handling wear. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
