Description

Lot of Two (2) Left Hand Daggers.

Comprising: 1) Measuring approximately 15-inches overall, with a 10 1/2-inch spear-point blade featuring a pronounced central ridge. Fitted with a round loop thumb rest, a steel guard of typical form with downward-curving quillons, a wire-wrapped grip, and a faceted steel pommel. 2) Measuring approximately 14-inches overall, with a 9 1/4-inch spear-point blade cut with a single fuller on each side. Equipped with a round loop thumb rest, a steel guard of typical form with straight quillons, a wire-wrapped grip, and a faceted steel pommel with button.

Note: Commonly referred to as parrying daggers or main gauche, these were designed for use alongside a rapier in the duel. Held in the left hand, they were employed to deflect or trap an opponent's thrusts while leaving the right hand free for offense. Both examples here appear to date from the Victorian era or later.

Condition: Good overall. Both exhibit a scattered gray patina with areas of staining, fine surface rust, and pitting, possibly the result of earlier cleaning. Wire-wrapped grips remain intact with expected spots of wear.
