Description
Clamshell Main Gauche Dagger.Approximately 18 1/2-inches overall, featuring a 13-inch blade with three-inch terminating fullers extending from the ricasso. The deeply fluted shell guard, evocative of a scallop shell, is complemented by gracefully curved quillons that end in tight outward curls. The grip is wrapped in fine silver wire, and the dagger is of iron construction throughout. Its globular pommel, adorned with vertical fluting, concludes in a small, simple capstan button. Its defining characteristics suggest that this example may date to the 18th century, reflecting the refined craftsmanship and stylistic transitions of that period.
Commonly known as a parrying dagger or main gauche, this weapon was designed for use in tandem with a rapier during duels. Wielded in the left hand, it served to deflect, block, or entrap an opponent's blade while the right hand remained free for attack. The craftsmanship and styling of both examples suggest manufacture during the Victorian era or later, reflecting a revival or decorative interest in Renaissance arms.
Condition: Very good overall, showing a light gray patina with localized staining, fine surface rust, and minor pitting consistent with age. The silver wire grip remains intact and well-fitted, exhibiting only the expected spots of wear from handling and time.
