Description

An Interesting Dagger in the 17th Century Style.

Measuring 16 1/2-inches overall, this substantial dagger is fitted with an 11-inch double-edged spear-point blade, cut with a single fuller on each side. Both fullers are inscribed with lettering, still distinctly visible though now softened with age and difficult to decipher. The blade is broad and robustly forged, designed to balance durability with effective handling.

The iron hilt is a striking example of period craftsmanship, worked throughout with a bold swirling pattern divided by well defined borders. Two large side rings extend from the guard which is fitted with a prominent clamshell guard [decorated with a floral motif, though sections are partially missing], while the quillons are shaped in a swelling form that terminates in finely worked decorative finials. The large pommel echoes this same motif, creating a unified composition that lends the dagger both harmony and visual weight. Despite its size, the piece weighs just over one pound, offering both authority and agility in the hand.

Good to very good overall. A dark, mellow patina covers the piece throughout. As noted, the clamshell guard is partially incomplete, with sections missing. Light pitting is visible in some protected areas. The grip and guard show minor looseness.
