Description

KIA Gettysburg

Confederate Soldier's Bowie Knife and Book of Psalms. Joseph Kent Ewing was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G of the 4th Virginia Infantry (CSA). His unit fought on Friday morning, July 3rd, attacking a fortified Union position on a hilltop, "... exposed to a heavy and destructive fire of shot, shell and musketry from which the regiment sustained a heavy loss in killed, wounded and missing of both men and officers... I have to regret the loss of many lives, among them Lieut. J. Kent Ewing, killed... [they] behaved to my entire satisfaction, and displayed a coolness and gallantry worthy of a victory, though we were unable to win one." (Report of Maj. William Terry, Fourth Virginia Infantry.) Ewing was part of the "Stonewall Brigade" under the command of Brig. General James A. Walker, per copies of his service record that accompany the lot. We offer his 15" Bowie knife. The bone handle is inscribed "J. K. Ewing" on one side and "4th Virginia" on the other. From more peaceful times, we also have the Psalm book presented to him by his mother (published in 1856 with unusually large type).
