Description

Confederate Navy Cutlass, Unknown Maker, Attributed to the CSS Texas.

25 1/2-inch flat blade. Brass hilt with two branches terminating at the large counterguard. Wooden handle affixed via three iron rivets. An old paper label affixed to the obverse side of the blade is captioned: "From The Texas / Richmond Yard / 1865 GAR Post 173". The CSS Texas was captured unfinished and intact at Richmond Naval Yard the day Richmond fell. Worthy of more research.

Condition: Good. Uniform light surface rust on the blade. From the Collection of Dr. Phillip R. Rutherford
