Description
1895 Presentation US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. Superb untouched overall condition. The 30" blade diamond shaped in cross section, profusely etched for 2/3 its length with floral/scrollwork, American flag, arms panoplies and large spread winged eagle on obverse along with etched panel with maker's logo on the ricasso, ""THE / M. C. LILLEY & CO. / 13 W. 30TH ST. / NEW YORK". reverse with similar etching but including American shield, crossed American flags, and Old English US. There is a proofmark of a small animal stamped on the reverse ricasso. Regulation style hilt made with small upturned counterguard on reverse. Leather covered and wire wrapped grip perfect. The sword retains the original gold bullion and black knot, and the hilt retains 100% of the original gilt. Nickled scabbard with floral decorated brass mounts perfect with just old coating of patina, mounts retaining most of the original gilt. Inscribed between the ring mounts "Presented to / Lieut J. Wray Cleveland / BY HIS COMRADES / IN Co. I / 7th REGT. / June 10th 1895". A cursory search has failed to yield information on Lieut. Cleveland but certainly worthy of further diligent efforts to track him. Exceptional M1860 with wonderful presentation.From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
