Description
State Of New York "Excelsior Brigade" Civil War Era Drum.14" tall and 16.25" in diameter with the manufacturers label on the inside of "Premium Brass And Snare Drums, Tamborines & Banjo's Made and Repaired By George Kilbourn 119 Orange Street, Albany NY". George Kilbourn started manufacturing drums in 1852, and continued up until 1864 when the business was taken over by William Kilbourn. The drum, being from New York, has a fine painted insignia of the "Excelsior Brigade" and reads "Excelsior Regt. Co. N.G.S.N.Y." (National Guard State of New York). A decorative pattern of brass tacks surrounds the airhole, and retains 80% paint on the wooden hoops. There is a split on the top hoop,. but does affect appearance. The heads, rope and tighteners all appear to be original. The painted emblem has some wear, but still retains bold colors. The heads are slightly warped, but overall in fine condition. A rare and desirable Civil War drum. The Excelsior Brigade was a military unit in the Union Army during the Civil War. Mainly composed of infantry regiments raised in the state of New York primarily by former U.S. Congressman Daniel Sickles, the brigade served in several of the Army of the Potomac's most important battles in the Eastern Theater, including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
