Description

Irish Brigade, 63rd Regiment, New York State Volunteers, Civil War ID Disc. The reverse is stamped, "Patrick Galligan / Co. F /63 / Reg. / I-B/N.Y.S.V. / New York City". The obverse has a central bust of General McClellan surrounded by the legend "Major General G. B. McClellan - War of 1861". The 1.125" coper disc is holed at 12 o'clock and toned.

Galligan enlisted on September 18, 1861 in New York City as a private at the age of 21. He was promoted, but reduced to the ranks in June 1862. In October 1862 Galligan left the service at Bolivar Heights, West Virginia.

The 63rd Regiment, or the "Third Regiment Irish Brigade," mustered into service in Brigadier General Thomas Meagher's Irish Brigade for three years during the fall of 1861. Recruited principally from New York City, the 63rd Regiment lost over 200 men at Antietam.
