Description
Identified 1851 Regulation Sword Belt Plate Used by Trooper in the 24th N.Y. Cavalry. Seldom are identified examples of the basic accoutrement plates encountered, making this sword belt plate especially desirable. The front of this Pattern 1851 plate bears the time-honored cast brass eagle motif surrounded by a three piece silver wreath. The face shows period use with some smoothness and a 1.5" section of the wreath missing at the bottom. The reverse is benchmarked "337." Visibly, but crudely, scratched into the back is "Privat Homer F Northrop/ Co, C 24th N,Y,/ Vol, Cav/ 1st Brigade 2d Div/ [ ] Corp" in scrawled lettering that takes up the entire panel. Northrop enlisted in the 24th on February 20, 1865, and was soon wounded in the Appomattox Campaign then getting underway. The unit would lose seventy-three men killed, wounded and missing in that effort alone, more than half its losses for the entire war. Northrop was discharged from the U. S. Central Hospital in Baltimore on June 3, 1865. Scarce to find with this history.Auction Info
