Description

Cased C. 1860 Surgeon's/Amputation Kit by Arnold & Sons London. Brass bound dovetailed mahogany case with lid and lock escutcheons 7" X 13" X 2 1/2". Set appears to be complete with over 25 instruments and includes the original key. All pieces marked Arnold & Sons London with the exception of the capital saw, although obviously original to the set, and one large scalpel which is unmarked and a period replacement. Instruments with ebony handles, with the larger pieces checkered. The capital saw is 12 1/4" overall with pivoting top rib. "Arnold & Sons / West Smithfield London" inlaid in ivory on the front edge of the case. All pieces in about perfect condition as is the case. Closure is affected by two brass hooks on the side as well as the lock. A very nice complete surgeon's kit from the Civil War period.
