Fully engraved half-title page used as frontispiece, title page with engraved vignette and printed in red and black. Many half-page wood engravings and additional engraved vignettes in the text. German text printed in two columns within frames.
Ornately tooled contemporary pigskin over boards with six raised bands on the spine and two metal closure clasps. Binding modestly soiled with some shelf wear at the edges, but it remains sound and in generally very good condition. Some offsetting to pages, with a slight dampstain at the top edge of the text block. A few pages with small closed tears, front endpaper and frontispiece detached. A few pages with old repairs. Occasional scattered foxing, else a sound copy, handsome and in very good condition.
Wolfgang von Hohberg was an Austrian nobleman who wrote and compiled this important seventeenth-century encyclopedia concerning the proper administration of a country estate. Much information on flowers, gardening, bridges, building, and various vocations is expanded upon in much detail. Subsequent volumes included information on cooking, wine-making, bee-keeping, etc. His original work was first published in 1682 and was quickly followed by expanded editions in 1687, 1695, 1701, and 1715.
