More Information:

Godwin (1562-1633) is described by Wood as a "...good man, grave divine, skillful mathematician, excellent philosopher, pure Latinist, and incomparable historian..." Elizabeth made him a bishop for his historianship.

"During his sixteen years' tenure of the see of Llandaff he employed his leisure in improving his 'Catalogue of Bishops,' and in collecting materials for the civil and ecclesiastical history of England. In 1615 he published an improved edition of his 'Catalogue,' with a dedication to James I, and annals of the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary, in elegant Latin. As a reward for these labours he was by the king's desire translated to the see of Hereford..." DNB

It should be noted that these annals also include Queen Elizabeth's coming to the throne. Some copies have an errata leaf which is not present here.     STC 11945. ESTC s12123
