Description

Edward, Earl of Clarendon. The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England. Begun in the year 1641. With the precedent passages, and actions that contributed thereunto, and the happy end, and conclusion thereof by the King's blessed restoration, and return upon the 29th of May, in the year 1660. Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1702-[04]. First edition of this massive and definitive history. Approximately 18 x 11.5 inches. Three folio volumes. [4], xxiii, [1, blank], 557, [1, blank]; [16], 581, [1, blank]; [22], 603, [1, blank], [21, index], [1, blank] pages. With all three engraved frontispiece portraits; two out of three half-titles (Volume III lacking half-title); and engraved printer's devices, sectional vignettes, and historiated capitals. Uniformly bound in nineteenth-century half brown levant morocco over marbled boards, spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands. Some rubbing to bindings, joints a bit worn (yet quite solid for such large volumes), Volume I has a tear to the lower margin of page 383, Volume II has some light dampstaining to the lower corners of several pages, and Volume III has short tears to the lower margins of pages 333 and 563 (none of these textual problems affect text). Overall, a very good set. "It is composed from material written at different periods and in widely different circumstances and it remains a classic work. It is also an important contribution to the art of biography and autobiography, and memorable for its portraits of figures as Falkland, Godolphin, Laud, and Strafford" (Drabble and Stringer, The Concise Oxford Companion to English Literature, 111). "One of the handsomest books hitherto produced in England" (Barker, The Oxford University Press and the Spread of Printing, 28).

CBEL 1680. Lowndes II, p.466.
