First Edition in English of Vertot's Magnificent History of the Knights of Malta
[René d'Aubert d'Auboeuf] L'Abbé Vertot. The History
of the Knights of Malta. London: Printed for G. Strahan
[and others], 1728. First edition in English of this beautiful and
comprehensive history of the ancient order of the Knights of Malta.
Two folio volumes. Approximately 13.75 x 8 inches. [viii], 487, [1,
blank], 155 (Proofs), [1, blank]; [ii], 220, [3, Explanation of
References of the Plan], [1, ads], 157-180 (Proofs), 143
(Dissertation Upon Government), [1, blank], 196 (Statutes), [xxiv,
Index] pages. With frontispiece and seventy engraved portraits of
the knights by Laurent Cars after Delijen throughout. With four
fold-out maps and one leaf of plans inserted throughout. Complete.
Bound to style in twentieth-century full brown pigskin, covers
triple-ruled in blind, spines triple-ruled in blind and stamped and
lettered in gilt in compartments, six raised bands, later
endleaves. Some wear to bindings, a few leaves with light chipping,
page 438 in volume I has a tear at top partially affecting text,
and on page 34 of the Proofs in volume I there is a small chip in
the upper portion of the leaf. A few gutters cracked (yet pretty
solid), the last 193 pages of volume II with minor worm damage at
bottom not affecting text. Some foxing in text, some plates heavily
foxed, minor browning, wear to maps. Overall, a very good set. This
history of the Knights of Malta, commissioned by them, was the
standard work on the subject for nearly two centuries.
