[Napoleon I] Pen Sketches of Napoleon I (Binders Title) Extraordinary Album With Thirty-nine Superb Pen Sketches With Napoleonic Themes, Circa 1820. No publication data present. Oblong quarto album in dark blue grained leather over beveled boards. Spine with four raised bands, full filigree panels with no text; front board with gilt title within nested borders, gilt floral framing and gilt rule borders. The back board has the same presentation with stamped gilt initials "W.F.H.". All edges gilt. Floral endpapers with nested filigree borders. Contents with thirty-nine 8" x 4.25" original pen sketches on paper mounted under tissue guards on the recto and verso of 11" x 8" album pages. Each sketch is captioned and many dated (1793-1815) by more than one hand in Italian. All thirty-nine sketches are clean with only light toning. Several album pages have come loose but all are present and simple repairs will set them right. The album binding is bumped with considerable wear to the edges and corners; front hinge separate from text block; back hinge with split starts.
The sketches are captioned as follows: [1] "Napoleone att Isola ... The sketches are very possibly in the hand of two or three Italian artists and date circa 1820. The style is neoclassical, the technique is competent and the subject matter is mostly of Napoleon's soldiers in Italy. The sketches were possibly commissioned and further research may unlock the albums origins. The 19th Century fine binding is in the French style, but most likely created in England [the title being in English].
