A Printing and the Mind of Man Title

[Law]. Henrici de Bracton. De Legibus & consuetudinibus Anglia, Libri Quinq... London: Richardum Tottellum, 1569. First edition. Small folio. Approximately 11.25 x 7.5 inches. [xvi], 444 fols. Near-contemporary full brown calf, rebacked preserving the original spine and burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Some wear to spine and boards, upper corner neatly removed from title-page (restored, with no loss of text), some small ink notations on title-page and some occasional marginalia, some marginal restoration to F7, some occasional dampstaining in text. Still, a fine copy of this classic of English law.

"Brachton based his book on the cases decided by the great judges of the first half of the century... as well as his own twenty year experience a 'justice itinerant'... He combined a systematic inquiry into the legal maxims of general validity with their practical application in the common law courts. Thus, he arrived at a formulation of principles which have determined the whole development of English law, of which the use of precedents is perhaps the most characteristic. His method was adopted and carried on by Littleton and Coke..." (Printing and the Mind of Man). PMM 89. STC 3475.
