More Information: Aimon (c960-c1010) was born at Perigord to a family of the aristocracy. he entered the monastery at Fleury at an early age. His most important writings are his Historia (Gesta) Francorum and a Vita of his friend and teacher Abbo. "The Gesta is dedicated to Abbo (d1004). It traces the history of the Franks from their origins to the accession of Pepin the Short. Compiled between 997 and 999, this history of the Franks marshals the entire Frankish tradition on behalf of the Capetian kingdom alone. It was conceived with a view towards bolstering the historical argument for the dynastic change of 987. According to R. H. Bautier, "It may well be said that true French historiography was born in the abbey of Fleury, and the credit for this is due to Aimon>' Indeed, his method was notably innovative--a unified presentation with a single dominant theme: the historical consciousness of a Frankish nation in the making in the central part of the  kingdom. In the elaboration of the story there is both genuine methodology and literary art. The sources are not transcribed literally and each passage rests upon a varied documentation brought together by the preparatory work of Abbo's disciples."
