    Everson's Second Book

William Everson. San Joaquin. Los Angeles: The Ward Ritchie Press, 1939. First edition limited to 100 copies. Inscribed by the author on the front-free endpaper with a long, personal autograph letter from the author tipped in at the rear of the book. Octavo. 38 pages. Title page decoration drawn by Hubert Buel. Publisher's tan paper over boards with paper title label mounted to the cloth backstrip. Fore-edge untrimmed. A near fine copy of Everson's scarce work.

Tipped in at the rear of the book is a long, one-page autograph letter dated July 15, 1939 written by William Everson to Frances Wilson of Selma, California in which he goes into great detail about how his friend Lawrence Clarke Powell arranged to have his book published by Ward Ritchie. He writes, in part: "Dr. Powell tells me that Ritchie, who is a poetry lover himself, became very interested in this book of mine and lavished on it more attention than any of his recent work. I think it shows it. It is one of the finest books I've ever seen, I think, and I can hardly believe my own good fortune."
