Publisher's green cloth with spine stamped in gold. Cloth is lightly rubbed along board edges and spine has a minor lean. Page edges lightly foxed. A bright, near fine copy.

 

A work of popular, escapist fiction dealing with British Imperialism and empire-building in Africa. Though popular with reviewers, The Explorer left a bad taste in Maugham's mouth. He later wrote: "I have a great dislike for it and if it were possible would willingly suppress it."
