Description
The Rare Suppressed Dust Jacket Art from the Original First Edition
W. Somerset Maugham. Of Human Bondage. London: Heinemann, [1931].3/6 Library edition, third impression. Octavo. 648 pages.
Publisher's green cloth with black stamping. Edges lightly rubbed. Foxing to page edges. Minor soiling, some edge wear, and several small tears to dust jacket. There is a half-inch smudge or rub (but no paper loss) to the "O" on the front panel of the jacket. Overall, a very good copy of an unusual item.
The distinguishing feature of this lot is the dust jacket. The illustration on the front of the jacket is the same as that used on the suppressed British first edition. The image is of the principal character, Philip Carey, in bohemian garb: black cape, red cravat, green trousers, and wide-brimmed hat. The image was pulled and the jacket of the first edition was replaced because the artist had drawn Carey's club foot on the wrong foot. This edition is not in Stott, and it is unclear why, sixteen years after its original appearance, this image should appear on this edition's dust jacket. For this reason, this book in this dust jacket is quite scarce.
