Approximately 11.25 x 7.75 inches. (12), a-F8, G6. 2-12, 261 pages.
272 (of 274) leaves, lacks initial and final blanks. Time-line rule
in outer margin of every page. Large woodcut of the Creation of
Eve, three half-page woodcuts of the Expulsion from Paradise, Cain
slaying Abel, and the Tower of Babel; over sixty small woodcut city
views, including repeats. Gothic type. Seventeenth century full
blind-ruled sheep with intersecting diagonal quadruple fillets on
covers. Short crack at bottom of rear joint, covers slightly
warped. Some soiling and stains in text, most on opening leaves,
worming at beginning and end causing slight text loss, minor
restoration to inner and outer margins of first few leaves,
scattered marginalia, later seventeenth century Italian printer's
waste mounted on rear end papers. Provenance: Petrus Filius
Clarinus de Petrisgemellus of Valliscande [?] in the diocese of
Novara (inscription below colophon, followed by long inscription by
his son or daughter stating that he dies on 4 February 1533, close
to midnight, leaving five children, three sons and two daughters,
his wife Bartola, daughter of Adam de Salino, the annotator's
mother, having died on 3 June 1529; marginal notes in both hands,
cropped). Overall, a very good copy.Giacomo Filippo Foresti da Bergamo (1434-1520) was an Augustinian monk, known as the author of several significant early printed works. He was a chronicler and Biblical scholar. His Supplementum chronicarum (1483) was a universal chronicle running to numerous subsequent editions. Amongst other things, it records Giovanni da Carignano's lost work on papal contacts at Avignon in 1306 with Ethiopian visitors.
"Fourth edition, second illustrated edition, of Jacobus de Bergamo's popular world chronicle. Most of the woodcut illustrations and the woodcut initials are those of the 1486 edition by Bernardinus Benalius. Rizius added to them the Tower of Babel cut and the fine larger city-view cuts of Venice, Rome, Verona and Genoa. The view of Rome may be the earliest printed view of that city." (Essling I: 303).
This book also has more-or-less realistic views of Alexandria, Ancona, Bergamo, Bologna, Brescia, Capua, Como, Dubrovnik, Ferrara, Fiesole, Florence, Gaeta, Constantinople, Milan, Marseille, Naples, Padua, Pavia, Pistoia, Porto Venere, Siena, Treviso, etc. On 248 verso, under the date 1458, is a reference to the beginning of printing giving the inventors names as 'Cutembergo'and Fust.
