Philadelphia: D. Rice & A. N. Hart, 1855. Third octavo edition. Three volumes. Octavo (10.25 x 6.75 inches; 261 x 174 mm.). [ii], , 333, [1, blank]; xvii, [1, blank], 9 (sic)-290; iv, 17 (sic)-392 pages. Preface (pages 1-2) bound before contents leaf in the first volume (pages iii-iv). Three frontispiece portraits (finished by hand) and one hundred-seventeen hand-colored lithographed portrait plates printed and colored by J.T. Bowen and heightened in gum arabic. Tissue guards. Contemporary red pebbled morocco over beveled boards, boards decoratively ruled and paneled in gilt, spines tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, yellow coated endleaves, all edges gilt. Volumes I and II rebacked, preserving the original spines. Front joint of volume III cracking. Some wear to spines and edgewear to boards, hinges repaired on volumes I and II, spines toned, some foxing and thumbsoiling to endleaves, a few plates trimmed close at lower edge, text and plates generally clean.
