Sir Winston S. Churchill. Step by Step. 1936-1939. London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., [1939]. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by Churchill on the front free endpaper: "To P. J. from Winston June 29 1939." Octavo, [366] pages. With fold-out map inserted at rear. Publisher's full green cloth. Front cover ruled and stamped in blind, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit browned, somewhat worn and rubbed with a few short tears. Cloth spine a bit browned. Still, a near fine copy with a superb Churchill association.Sir Percy James Grigg (1890-1964) was born to a modest West Country family, and rose swiftly through the civil service ranks, eventually becoming the Secretary of State for War under Churchill in 1942, and holding that position through the duration of World War II. Sir Alan Brooke, Chief of the Imperial General Staff (the English equivalent of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), wrote of Grigg in his memoir: "Providence was indeed kind to me during the war to have placed P. J. Grigg at the helm of the WO...gifted with one of the quickest brains I have met...the more one saw of him the more one realized his sterling qualities of unflinching straightness."
