Description

Zane Grey: A Signed Early Printing of Thunder Mountain. (New York: Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, [1935]). Early edition, signed by the author on the front free endpaper under a printed inscription: "Your trail and mine cross in mutual love of the Great West. Sincerely, [signed in blue ink]: Zane Grey". Octavo (7.5" x 5"). 309 pages. Green cloth lettered in black, illustrated dust wrapper. Chipping and light wear around the jacket edges, pages lightly browned, else a very good copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco book-back slipcase with gilt tooling on the spine. Grey was an author of adventure stories of the American West. Originally, Grey practiced dentistry in his hometown of Zanesville, Ohio, but he happily abandoned this profession in 1904 following his experiences out west during a holiday journey. He immediately relocated to America's romantic unsettled borders and began writing westerns one after another, eventually totaling fifty-two novels. His best-known work, Riders of the Purple Sage (1912), sold nearly two million copies. Grey also had a great love of big-game fishing, and wrote several books on the subject. His success was due to the "escapist" lure of his simple adventure plots and attractive, authentic settings.
