Description

William Hope Hodgson. The Night Land. A Love Tale. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to bifolium mounted to front free endpaper recto, "March 25th -|12." Octavo. 583, [1, imprint], 16 (publisher's catalog) pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth decorated in gilt and blind. Corners just bumped, head and foot of spine just pushed. Cream endpapers; minor toning, a few light pencil notations and offsetting to front pastedown, bifolium mounted to front free endpaper recto, minor soiling to rear endpapers. Internally generally clean and tight, top and fore-edge trimmed, bottom edge rough trimmed; minor intermittent foxing, minor text block edgewear. Near fine.

Currey notes that only one copy in this binding was examined, containing an inscription dated 22 March 1912. Similar to Currey's examined copy, this is presumed to have been part of a limited special binding for the author, as the inscription predates the general publication date in April 1912.

Bleiler (1978), page 101; Bleiler, Supernatural, 817; Currey, page 243, binding A (presumed this copy). From the Gary Munson Collection
