Uncorrected Galley Proofs Inscribed by the Author, With an Autograph Letter from Daniel Webster

Stephen Vincent Benét. Author's Own Copy of the Uncorrected Galley Proofs for The Devil and Daniel Webster. Weston, Vermont: The Countryman Press, 1937. Uncorrected galley proofs. Inscribed by the author on the first page. Octavo. Unpaginated. Spiral bound with salmon cloth front board with black and gold vignette. Some wear to the binding holes on the boards, else very good. Offered in a black cloth chemise and slipcase. The slipcase has a beautiful morocco spine label with titles stamped in gilt.

Presentation copy inscribed by the author on his 41st birthday: "For [...]/ with very good wishes from/ Stephen Vincent Benét/ [illegible] July 22, 1939." A period engraved portrait of Daniel Webster is mounted on the inner left flap of the chemise to which has been affixed Webster's clipped signature: "Danl Webster/ U.S. Senate." Adding further interest to this exceptional lot is a two-page Daniel Webster autograph letter signed "D. W." The letter is dated March 28, 1850. Webster writes in part: "The letter is admirable -- too good, too good -- I do not deserve the one hundredth part of what it says."
