Description
Millard Fillmore: A Signed Book from His Personal Library: John Stewart's Stable Economy; A Treatise on the Management of Horses, In Relation to Stabling, Grooming, Feeding, Watering, and Working. (New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1845), 378 pages including Index plus several pages of advertisements and an "Appleton's Catalogue of Valuable Publications", black tooled cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, 8vo (4.75" x 8"), clear plastic dust jacket. Signed "Millard Fillmore Buffalo" on the front free endpaper. Fillmore lived in Buffalo, New York for many years before his election as vice president under Zachary Taylor, establishing both a family and a highly successful law firm in northern New York. He was also an avid reader and bookworm who was the first to establish a library in the White House when he discovered its lack of reading material. His copy of Stable Economy presented here is in good condition, with usual shelf wear and a small dampstain that affects a minor area of each page of the book. The binding is sound. A previous owner's bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. The book comes housed in a quarter leather slipcase with marbled boards, gilt spine titles and five raised leather spine bands.
