Miguel Covarrubias. Negro Drawings. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1927.Edition limited to 100 copies, of which this is number 88, with an original drawing by Covarrubias, signed by the artist. Frontispiece and fifty-six full-page plates, some in color. Preface by Ralph Barton. Introduction by Frank Crowninshield.
Small quarto. Unpaginated. Publisher's gilt-stamped black cloth over bright blue boards. Top edge gilt. Slight fading along top and bottom edges of cloth. Hinges strong but starting very slightly. Remnants of book store ticket to rear pastedown. A near fine copy in the original slipcase, which is splitting and somewhat worn.
Though only 23 years old when this significant collection was published, Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias was already a prolific and successful artist in New York. He was fascinated by Harlem and became friends with many of the artists and writers who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. He sketched the men and women of the neighborhood -- "flappers, musicians, dancers, street preachers, socialites, blues singers, mothers and children, waiters, and others" -- portraits that created "a careful, profound consideration of various facets of Harlem's cultural life, as seen through a modernist's eyes" (Wintz). "No artist captured the Harlem Renaissance so well as Miguel Covarrubias or with such devastating wit and sympathy" (Kellner). From the Estate of John McLaughlin.
Kellner, The Harlem Renaissance. Wintz, Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance.
